TIGER Woods wannabes in Chippenham are being given the chance to tryout Golf with a range of taster sessions.

The lottery funded Wiltshire Golf Partnership, which represents most of the clubs in Wiltshire, is tasked to promote this healthy pastime, and will be holding information days to try and entice budding golfers.

Set up in 2007, the partnership exists as part of a much bigger national golf awareness programme, which is trying to encourage more people into the game, in the most cost effective and painless method possible.

And Following consultation with Wiltshire Golf Clubs, the Partnership submitted a Development Plan to England Golf and has been awarded £20,000 of funding over three years.

Now it’s your chance to come along to one of several taster sessions coming up over the next few months and learn more.

Brian Daniel, of Wiltshire County Golf Union, said: “The perception is that it is a snobby game and it costs a fortune, but that’s not the case.  Golf has come out of that mode a long time ago, and golf clubs are nice places to be and are available to all.

“Whilst a lot of work goes into introducing youngsters to the game, clubs are continually signing up people of retirement age, and of course, when your knees get too dodgy to carry on playing football, this is the new sport you need to sustain you through to 85 or beyond.”

Most clubs in Wiltshire now offer introductory memberships for a modest sum, which allow those interested to try the game without any commitment.

The next taster information session for the area will be held at Leekes of Melksham, on July 4, where Friendly faces will be on hand to advise you, and chat about the game.

For further information about the Partnership's work go to www.wcgu.org.uk and follow The Wiltshire Golf Partnership link or ring 01249 814368.

Following the golf display/exhibition at Leekes on Saturday, I thought you may like some feedback. The event went well as 8 people made positive enquiries about joining a club, and another 50 were interested enough to take a leaflet and have a think about it. Nice to see some golf supporters out there making comment on this site, and in particular, one contributor has hit on a problem – the cost of golf for young people once they stop being ‘juniors’. This is exercising the minds of club managers everywhere, and several clubs will now tailor make a package to suit your lifestyle, and income, so that you can be a member of a club, and simply have restricted playing rights. Perhaps this is the way forward for clubs struggling for members, although there are financial implications for the club, in so doing. If you need more information on starting the game (inexpensively) or getting into a golf club, email me on briandaniel@talktalk.net

Sounds like a good initiative. They should also make some plans for how to keep juniors at a club after they turn 18 and subs begin to rise!

You can never be too busy to find space to get 18 holes in. Especially now we're having such lovely weather.
