Petrol Prices Peaking In Chippenham

Petrol prices are sky high across the UK and Chippenham hasn’t escaped the increase, with some pumps charging up to £1.40 per litre.

According to website petrolprices.co.uk Chippenham’s highest average price is 134.9p per litre for unleaded fuel and 138.9p for diesel.

The cheapest average comes in at 121.9p for petrol and £1.32 for diesel, so still extremely high.

Especially when you consider it was considerably cheaper just a few weeks ago.

Frogwell Esso garage is the cheapest for petrol at the moment, at 121.9p but most expensive for diesel at 138.9p.

The rest seem to be around the 123.9p mark for petrol and 128.9p for diesel.

So why the sharp rise?

Well, there were two tax rises at the beginning of the year, both of which had an effect on the cost of fuel. Firstly, fuel duty increased on New Year’s Day and then the VAT rate went up three days later.

Add to this the fact that crude oil at a two-year high and it means we’re now all paying far more at the pump.

So where are you filling up in Chippenham at the moment? If you’ve found somewhere with fuel prices at less than 120p I’d love to know!

The Big Government Fuel Tax Rip Off

Did you know that the UK average price of a litre of unleaded fuel before any tax is added is just 45.72 Pence.

Add on top of this the current Fuel duty of 58.19 Pence per Litre.

This makes the average UK cost per litre of Unleaded fuel is 103.91 Pence Before VAT is added.

Now apart from the extortionate tax rate that is Fuel Duty (Greater than 100%) the government adds VAT, which we all know stands for Value Added Tax. The big con is that VAT is not just charged on the Value of the Fuel (45.72 pence) but on the duty as well. So with the current rate of VAT at 20% we are charged that on the full 103.91. So that makes your 45.72 pence become 124.70 Pence.

That means of the 124.70 pence you are paying at the pump, 78.98 pence goes to the government in Taxes.

Why apart from obvious greed does the government think its right for the government to give fuel this double whammy. What is the excuse for charging VAT on the Fuel Duty. What excuse is there for Charging VAT at all. FUEL is not a Luxury.

To say fuel prices have never gone down is not true. Just over two years ago just before the recession started, Unleaded fuel was around One Pound and Twenty Pence a Litre. Diesel was almost One Pound Thirty Pence a Litre. Not long after the recession started the price fell quite dramatically to around One Pound Ten as there was less demand. Its true the price has steadily risen since then, but this is due to the Price being held artificially high due to the OPEC Countries limiting supply to keep the price high.

We are being held to Ransom by the OPEC Countries and the fact we rely on Imported oil.

Another of the reasons we are paying over the odds is that you pay the VAT (now 20%) on not just the cost of the fuel, but on the fuel duty as well. Thats a double hit of tax that the government is not eager to publicise, and many people do not realise is actually happening.

Why should we be paying VAT on a tax? VALUE ADDED TAX, by the very definition of its name it that it is a tax on the Value! not its price.
