I am a Founder Member and Vice President of the Rotary Club of Chippenham Larkrise. We have 22 members and meet from 07:15 on the first and third Tuesday each month. Rotary International is not a charity it is an organisation that raises money for Rotary supported charities and good causes.
Rotary do have a charity called Rotary Foundation but that has specific aims and currently the PolioPlus initiative is a principal aim which involves working with The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which is leading the fight to eradicate Polio. Together the Gates and Rotary Foundations are raising US$555 million in a three year period to eradicate Polio and fundraising is on target with a year to run.
Rotary also contribute to local and national charities by providing ‘Service’ by the way of Community Service Projects throughout the year. The recent Bonfire Night in Chippenham was organised and run by volunteers from the 3 Rotary Clubs in Chippenham and by Rotarians from Trowbridge. We have 5 or 6 large events a year and all organisation and operation of the events is done by Rotarians on a volunteer basis: thus maximising the proceeds of the events which all go to charity and good causes.
We also have social events and smaller fundraising events that involve Rotarians and their guests.
As members we donate our time rather than giving money and if we do contribute money we get something in return - like a meal, a ticket to attend an event or to buy something that is old for charity.
