BT has upgraded a further 62 locations set to receive faster, fibre optic broadband and they have pledged to upgrade exchanges serving 40 per cent of the UK (10 million residences) by 2012 at a cost of £1.5bn.
Most of the towns and cities to get the upgrade are based in the south east of England or London.
As well as Chippenham the new location upgrade list is as follows:
Albert Dock, Andover, Aylesbury, Bangor (Northern Ireland), Beauchief, Bichester, Blunsdon, Bothwell, Braintree, Bramhall, Brighton Hove, Caversham, Chandler’s Ford, Chippenham, Coalville, Congleton, Crowthorne, Dalgety Bay, Didcot, Dunfermline, Earley, Earlsdon, Eastleigh, Fair Oak, Glasgow Newton Mearn, Greenford, Guiseley, Harpenden, Hednesford, Henley on Thames, Kenilworth, Langley, Livingston Station, Llandedeyrn, Llanishen, Locksheath, Lofthouse Gate, Maidenhead, Merton Park, Mile End, Mitcham, Newport Pagnell, Ortons, Parsons Green, Penicuik, Portishead, Portsmouth Central, Putney, Ranmoor, Reading South, Sittingbourne, Skyport, Solihull, Stoneygate, Sutton Cheam, Tamworth, Toothill, Wanstead, Warwick, Willaston, Wimbledon, Wokingham, Worle.
The latest batch of upgrades are expected to be completed by summer 2010, with most exchanges being kitted up with VDSL+, providing fibre-from-the-exchange (FTTC) to the provider’s road-side cabinets.
The maximum speed using this new fibre is 40Mb, previously users have had download speeds of between 10Mb and 20Mb.

To answer dollery's question no this would no include Calne. all so once the FTTC - Fiber-to-the-cabinet service is up and running you will see no change to your current ADSL speed unless you take BT up on its offer of BT infinity for an extra charge of course ! as you we would just remain on BT standard Ancient copper wiring.Any this is my understanding of it ,however if there is any BT bods out there please do correct me if I'm wrong .:-)

Reporti hope this means that the overall connection speeds will improve as we have been paying for an up 10mb service but barely receiving over 4mb. as more people want to take advantage of
faster broadband the technology in place will struggle if its not upgraded to deal with it.
