Parking Charges Hiked Again In Chippenham!

Th rumours are true - parking in Chippenham now costs more.
The council issued an official notice notifying the public that the price of parking in town has risen, after a decision was taken at a council meeting back in February. But we warned of the charges here on Chippenham People in January.
And the changes came into effect on Monday.According to the council the new fees will go towards protecting rural bus services, many of which are suffering following the government spending cuts.
The new charges differ from town to town and vary between carparks but in Chippenham alone one hour now costs 1.10p, up from 50p! And remember it was free for the first hour not so long ago.
How has it affected you so far? Are you noticing the difference? For me, it certainly pushes me to use out of town stores like Sainsburys where I don't have to pay. Rather than dig out change jut to pop to Tesco, for example.
Let us know what you think.

In town this morning, taking advantage of a free parking day (Its a bank holiday). The town is deserrted at 0930 when its FREE PARKING.
I do prefer it when its quiet and I can drink my expensive Starbucks in reletive piece and quiet, however if parking is such an issue, where is everyone when its FREE PARKING.
What I did notice today, was a couple of people putting money in the parking machine in Emerygate.

ReportThe Council are again blinkered in their quest to close down Chippenham town centre. Pound shops and coffee houses!
Carrying vast quantities of change or paying in excess of the over priced parking changes due to not having the correct change does not appeal!
Internet shopping or out of town centre supermarkets are now the preferred method of shopping for those 'I'll just pop into town' items.
Are members of the public going to make a b-line to Chippenham to pay high parking rates for over priced coffee? The Council should be trying to attract visitors not focus on a short term tax insentive - too many town centres have been lost to narrow minded short term cash cow initiatives!

ReportThe numbers are simple, this represents an increase of 110%
Indirect taxation is far more lucrative than council tax increases, think about your votes next time!!!
I wonder if this is the LIB-DEM interpretation of fairness????

ReportI agree with the foregoing comments. Have the Council taken leave of their senses? It almost seems like a deliberate ploy to kill off our town centres - I wonder the shopkeepers (those who remain) don't make more of a fuss about it. Next we will be granting planning permission for more out of town stores or extensions thereto, all with free parking, which will escalate the town centre situation into a disaster area. If you have an election in your town area coming up, make this an issue to take up with your councillor.
Also, I wonder if local polticians ever read this newsy site, and pick up on peoples views? If so, some expanation would be appreciated. Dollery

ReportWow, 40p in Melksham. I guess the council would argue that Chippenham has much more variety on the high street, compared with smaller towns like Melksham or Corsham for example. But still, it wont take much for people to stop bothering!
