Staycation is the buzz word of the summer with the economic climate making expensive foreign holidays unobtainable for many families.

But if you're thinking that, that means heading for Britain's coastline then think again. Wiltshire is one of the UK's most idyllic counties and there are a whole load of holiday opportunity on the doorstep, just a stone's throw from Chippenham.

Most people would admit that they're guilty of neglecting the areas closest to home so why not make a holiday out of exploring what's been right under your nose.

Chippenham is blessed with great transport links so some of the gems of the South West are just a short journey by car or train.

For starters, try Bath. It might be a top shopping spot but there's plenty more. If you haven't been to the historic Roman Bath's since your year 9 school trip then it might be worth revisiting them for a greta day out.

And Bath's new modern Thermae Spa is just over the road for some pampering after a day sightseeing. And Bath has plenty of fantastic hotels that will make your forget where you are.

If you're looking to escape hustle and bustle then take your pick from Chippenham's surrounding villages. Lacock is famed for its part in many Hollywood blockbusters but it's also an ideal place to pitch yourself for a holiday. Take advantage of the cycle way for days out on the bike, or walks into the Wiltshire countryside.

And in the other direction Castle Combe is set in beautiful countryside perfect for those with a pair of walking boots. Make it a luxury break with a stay at the Castle Combe Manor hotel.

Or for help finding the perfect place to base yourself for a staycation take a look at www.wiltshirefarmstay.co.uk

And don't forget we're on the border of the picturesque Cotswolds.

For ready made family holidays try CenterParcs at Longleat nr Warminster. One of the UK's biggest ready made holiday attractions is just down the A350 and offers weeks worth of activities under one big purpose built roof.

Camping is also a great way to forget you're just a few miles from home and Wiltshire has plenty of camping/caravan parks to help you get back to nature.

If DIY holidays aren't your thing then you won't be short of help. Chippenham High Street is lined with travel agents, both chain and independent. Pop into David Brown travel, they'll have plenty of ideas to help you plan the perfect holiday, and if you are feeling more adventurous they have frequent offers for long haul flights and package holidays. Or Azure Holidays, another local agent, specialise in villas abroad.

Alternatively try Thomas Cook or Thompson, both in the town centre.

Have i missed any local holiday hidden gems? Where would you recommend? Or is it better to head away from the UK this summer?

You make a good point max_allen but i'm assure by Sustrans that their 'Volunteer Rangers are on the case and have open dialogue with all parties involved.' whatever that means...

Maybe we'll get some use of the path before winter comes and makes it impassable anyway!

Mentioning Chippenham, Lacock and cycle paths in the same paragraph is a bit odd when the Chippenham-Lacock cycle path remains "closed"... Or replaced with an on road route for the whole distance.
