Chippenham Town Hall, High Street, Chippenham, Wiltshire
7.30pm - 9.30pm
Everyone is welcome and bring your friends and family!
This is a public meeting between Chippenham residents and our local MP Duncan Hames to discuss the 'gagging law' which is currently going through parliament.
The 'gagging law' slashes the spending limits on campaigning for the year before any election. What this means in practice is that community groups, charities and campaigning organisations will all be restricted if this Bill passes through parliament. Election time is when ordinary people have the most influence on our politicians. On the big issues of the day – whether or not to go to war, the future of our NHS, the environment, welfare, immigration, etc. – we'd all be gagged, even if we don't explicitly mention politicians or political parties.
The government has made changes to the 'gagging law' in the face of criticisms from charities like Oxfam. The trouble is, the changes are cosmetic, not substantial. The restrictions on civil society campaigns still stand.
We're meeting with Duncan Hames MP to ask him what he's doing about this bill and to hold him to account over her party's plans.
There'll be a panel of speakers and lots of opportunity for questions from the floor.
