An M&S would be good and would increase the appeal of the high st. Plus it would be great not to have to travel miles to get decent quality clothing etc. Poundland or some other cheap shop would not be a step forward, theres enough 'tat' shops around the town centre - Wilko's fill that hole already.
A Poundland in the prime spot in town i'm afraid would not make people stop in Chippenham to shop - if anything it will put people off.
i dont know who some people think they are,its only chippenham after all, why are they trying to make it like some london high street? i think woolworths should be filled up with a decent shoe shop, or a decent record store like HMVs . and i dont see what would be wrong with a poundland either . the people of chippenham like to think they are better than anyone else . well im afraid we are not all rich .
The attitude of some people - "its only Chippenham after all" - sucks. The town centre needs to be more appealing to bring shoppers in, not deter them because "its only Chippenham" and that only has poundland, mobile phone shops and wilkinsons. "Oh lets go shopping one step up from Chippenham and go to a London high street! " - get real!
I guess if this is a common narrow minded attitude then we will only ever be "only Chippenham"
Also are you saying that shops in town should only cater for people who have little money? I would never pidgeon hole someone by what they earn or where they shop. I am not rich, but a lot of people do have reasonable incomes and don't want to buy poor quality. I would much prefer to spend my hard earned in quality shops where the goods last. To do that requires a trip to Swindon, Bristol or Bath - who loses? - "only Chippenham".
another town has released the space for an indoor market, this I feel would benefit our town and would utilise a currently wasted prime space. Long term though I would like to see children's clothing, such as a concession of 'Next' or 'M&S' as I now have to travel to Bath or Swindon for childrens clothing. I miss toys that 'Woolies' sold, we have Argos, but I want to touch, read, and browse selves for choice, I have had to travel to 'Toys R Us' in Swindon for birthdays and holiday treats. I also miss a proper CD/DVD/console games shop, sorry but WH Smiths have a dreadful choice, which is silly as they really could have used the closure of 'Woolies' to their advantage. Christmas is coming the town have left it all too late, I'm off to spend my money in Bath and Swindon, out of county.
Not Poundland, it is not a good message to send to potential incoming shops in the future, not M&S it's no longer the quality shop it used to be, HMV might be OK, Primark also good for my daughter!

@21elephants - How can you say M&S is no longer the quality shop it used to be and then suggest Primark in the same post?
Seriously though; I'd love to see a M$S here, or maybe a BHS, some kind of department store with great displays, nice enough stuff and plenty of choice.
@NetteG: I'm with you on this one.
How about a space, operated by the council, not the people that run (down) the Emery Gate, containing semi-permanent lockable stalls for local produce and other such.
I used to get all my perishables from such an place where I used to live. Good value, good quality and a boost for our hard pressed local farmers. The occasional farmers market is all well and good, but if this was to happen, it would get people into the habit of buying their food there and so provide a good solid outlet for local products.

I will personally be outraged if a poundland shop fills woolies. For one, there is one where DTB's used to be, and another will make this town too cheap, quite literally and phsically. A more up market shop like M&S or Debenhams will be better, as, for another point, it is an extremely large space, one of the largest available at the moment, and hence some chavvy poundland shop will not benefit from the space. We don't need another poundland! Definately a more respectable shop should go there, otherwise I shall never set foot in the shop. Woolworths has served us extremely well; we cannot shove a pound shop where its grave lies.

I miss woollies and am in agreement with those who would like to see a shop like m&S, as I'm sick of having endure the traffic jams and exorbitant parking costs to go in to Bath when I want to buy the sort of product you might find in a reasonable department store, whether it be kids clothes / toys, a gift, or a clothes for myself for work. Chippenham already has plenty of low value shops for general goods, adult fashion etc A "market" for local produce / smaller traders would be great, but might take too much organisation, and it's maybe too large a space to fill in that way on a daily basis.
M & S or Next are the type of stores that are missing, there are a selection of shops for the youngsters, but being a woman of more "mature years" I find that I have to shop elsewhere to get what I need. There is also the problem of finding yourself wearing the same outfit as the woman next door when there is so little choice !!
