Hello, my name is Karen and I am thinking of moving to the Chippenham area from Bedfordshire sometime in 2010.  I don't know Wiltshire at all other than what I have heard and seen so I thought it would be a good idea to get a feel of the place via this site. Thanks.

I moved to Chippenham from Shropshire in August, and like Karen, I had no knowledge of the area. If you have children, this can be a great starting point for your research. I have to say I was very impressed with the range of children's activities and groups available through Surestart, the Children's Centres and through the Museum and Library. My only niggle in this area was the lackadaisical attitude of the Education Department when I was trying to get my children into a local school, but that's another story!
Chippenham is well off for supermarkets, but not so much for other shopping - especially for children's clothing - but then there's always the proximity of Bath! It is well endowed with gyms and sporting facilities, and the secondary schools have excellent reputations. Certainly not a bad place to move to at all!
Good luck with your move, Karen!

I'm Paul, born & bred in the Nam lol!! Big lovable chap, single dad, currently single. Have Christian beliefs, been around the world, big fan of Liverpool & Chippenham Town FC!!

Chippenham badly needs better facilities for youngsters, potholes to be repaired, less coffee & mobile phone shops. Wish there were more local shops to give the town centre more character. Still enjoy living here though, Birds Marsh is great (Hands off developers) most people are sound & you can't beat getting a takaway from good ol' Lan-go-lays (Langleys chippy) after a Bluebirds victory!   :)

    Hello

Welcome to Chippenham People! I would recommend checking out some of the larger new estates such as Cepen Park North, Pewsham or Cepen Park South. All have good school links and are quiet/safe for families. Alternatively, there are some great outlying villages in Chippenham, such as Kington St Michael, Kington Langley, Stanton St Quintin.

But in general, most areas are very family friendly, with houses popping up all the time. Local schools all have a great reputation and there's lots for kids to do.

I hope that helps, let us know if you need any more info...

    Thank you Lois

Very Useful info. Cepen Park North looks nice and it sounds like Chippenham would be a good place for kids. I need to check the house prices and school availabilities too. Thanks again for the info

We retired to Chippenham after working for 30 years in London. Seems like we landed on our feet. North Wiltshire is a lovely part of England, with lots to do. We live not too far from the station, and so we can still enjoy the best that London has to offer. Our only gripe is the infestation with fast food outlets, to service the kids when they leave the pubs in the wee small hours. I am tempted to collate a record of photographs of the mess they leave on the streets, and post copies to our prospective MPs to reach them in time for breakfast. We were used enough to it in London, but had hoped that Chippenham would be more civilised.

But encouraging kids to binge drink means big bucks for some, no doubt.

    Hi im Chris
I have Just moved to Chippenham from London with my job and am Currently the store manager of Store 21. I think Chippenham is a great little town a bit small and stuck in its ways but im finding the people friendly and approachable. The surrounding areas are fantastic and can’t wait till summer to explore even more. But my big question is what’s there to do in the Evenings? Im not really a drinker but want to make some friends and get a bit of a social life so if anyone has some suggestions im willing to try just about anything.

Hi Im David Dixon and Im a Moonraker!. I was born at Corsham nurses home on 26th December 1946. My Mother Marjorie Rosemary Dixon (nee Matthews) is 90 on 30th May 2010. We lived in Grittleton at the time. During the war mum was a teleprinter operator at RAF Hullavington. Mum attended Canning College in Bath. She says she knew lots of young airmen who never returned. My mothers parents were Fredrick William Matthews from Foxham (he was a gardener at RAF Hullavington) and Mabel Ellen Matthews from Great Sommerford. Both my grandparents are burried at Grittleton church where mum was an organist during the war and afterwards. My Mum married Albert Dixon an RAF Master Pilot stationed at RAF Hullavington (he flew one of the Dakotas for the film 'The Red Beret' starring Alan Ladd at RAF Abingdon in the early 1950s). I attended Grittleton primary school in the 1950s before we were posted to Germany with the 2nd Tactical Air Force. I met my Dad when I was about four years old as he was in Korea and couldant get home. Mum worked at Westinghouse in Chippenham when I was young until Dad returned after the Korean war. Our doctor (Dr Royal) was at Castle Combe where I was treated for Pinks disease when I was 9 months old. Fortunately Dr Beryl Corner at Bath University Hospital spotted what was wrong with me (mercury poisoning) and I recovered fully (?). This led to Woman's Own magazine getting a ban on babys teething powders containing mercury. I am now sixty-three and work as a mechanical engineer in rail track design for Tarmac (just completed a rail layout for Thingley, Corsham). I will never forget the happy times spent in Chippenham in my early years. Woolworths and the toy shop in Chippenham were my favourites. An unemployed person tried to give me his Alsation as he couldant afford to feed it anymore in Chippenham high st (I was eight at the time) but when mum found me holding the dog (a beautifull German Shepard) she made be give it back! I would dearly like to contact my school friend Elizabeth Holborough (maiden name) who lived at the post office in Grittleton. Dont forget Marjorie is NINETY on the 30th May. Happy Birthday Mum from your two sons David and Richard and their familiesxxx. Oh yes everything is great about CHIPPENHAM especially the locals!
