Recycling in Chippenham: Have your say
By Lois_Avery | Thursday, June 17, 2010, 19:28
Of all the council's services this is the one that gets people irritated
the most - recycling.
Whether it's bin collections running late or being missed entirely or
not having enough provision to recycle properly it's the topic that
council's receive most complaints about each year.
And the Wiltshire Council's latest move is likely to create a wave of
response as they ask for the public's opinion about
their new proposals.
Here's what they're suggesting:
The proposal is that the council continues with the existing black
box recycling collection
and will also provide:
- A kerbside collection of plastic bottles and cardboard every two
weeks
- An optional free kerbside collection of garden waste every
two weeks
So what do you think? Have you seen it done better elsewhere? Other
counties have two large wheelie bins for recycling.
And what about the fortnightly vs weekly debate that always riles
communities? Is two weeks between collections too long?
Or do you just think it's a load of old rubbish? (Sorry, couldn't
resist)
Toby Sturgis, cabinet member for waste,
justified the council's proposals saying it will save taxpayers money:
"We want people to
recycle as much as possible in Wiltshire. Our aim
is to provide a first
class recycling service no matter where residents live in the county and
increase our current recycling rate from 40.5 percent to over 50
percent.
"It is vital that we reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill
sites as space is at a premium and we must reduce the gas emissions and
environmental impact these sites have on our county.
"The impact of not reducing the amount of rubbish will be the
landfill
taxes, which will increase from £12.5million to £17million by 2015.”

Speaking from experience, in Hampshire, where we lived before moving here, we had the 2 wheely bin approach thrust upon us and at first were not too happy about it as it meant our 'normal' bin was collected now every 2 weeks.
However it didn't take that long to adjust and it was amazing how well it got you into recycling. After a few months we were quite adept at recycling and it was not an issue - in fact the 'normal' bin didn't really get full and the recycling wheely bin was always full (they would also collect extra recyclables too if left out) - Everyone wins!
I would like to see this happen here as I know it works. The little black box is just a pain to put out, doesn't take glass etc, could get heavy, if its wet....ugh. If I'm honest I don't like to use this very often :( But, give me a wheely bin for recycling and try and stop me! If you want more recyling in Wilts - make it easy and generally people will use it.
Would also welcome free garden waste collection.
