Smokers of Wiltshire are reminded by Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service to 'put it out- right out' as part of National No Smoking Day 2013 which is held today.
National No Smoking Day is a day where smokers avoid smoking for one day as well as highlighting the dangers of smoking in the community and in the home.
Watch Manager Neil Chamberlain from the Community Safety Department said: "Unfortunately, it is far too easy to accidently leave a cigarette burning in an ashtray, or to fall asleep while smoking. It's a sad fact that more people die in smoking material related fires than any other- while cigarettes are the cause of less than 10% of all fires, they actually account for around a third of all fire deaths."
Cigarettes can burn up to 700 degrees which set fire to flammable substances nearby or other materials such as carpets and curtains. Cigarettes must be completely stubbed out and disposed of safely to avoid danger.
Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service precautions when smoking
• Never smoke in bed
• Never leave cigarettes lying around
• Always use a proper ash tray and make sure it can't be knocked over
• Take special care where you are tired or when you've consumed alcohol
• Keep matches and lighters away from children
• Make sure you have a working smoke alarm – and test it every week.
