The EIBA's area competition secretary Nick Grenfell, from the North Wilts club, showed he can play a bit when he qualified for the final stages of the national over 60 singles championship.

Grenfell led Bristol's David Constant, the former Test cricket umpire, 12-3 after nine ends, and pressed home to a 21-9 victory that sets him up for a clash with Norfolk taxidermist Brian Taylor, at Melton Mowbray later this month.

In the same competition, Somerset's Liberty Trophy team manager Don Fowkes will face Adur's Terry Honnor, father of England international Ian Honnor.

Bristol duo Mike Humphries and John Horsted proved too strong for Nailsea's Brian Deverill and John Couch in the area pairs final, and clinched their place at the same Melton venue, 27-16.
