The £21m state-of-the-art new college building will be built on land just behind the existing college buildings off Cocklebury Road, Chippenham.
A 9,100m2 three storey building will provide a completely new purpose built modern campus for the college and town of Chippenham. The new world class facilities will open to students from September 2015.
The new college will transform the future of learning in Chippenham and support the plans for economic growth in the town. The plans for this project have the full support of Wiltshire Council and the Local Economic Partnership and Chippenham Vision.
The new facilities will support growth in vocational training and apprenticeships in areas such as engineering, construction and hair and beauty as well as university level courses and army resettlement. The new campus is being designed to be flexible to meet the future anticipated demands of students, employers and the community and will provide industry standard workshops and vocationally-tailored spaces, together with realistic working environments.
The new college will include:
• Construction, engineering and motor vehicle workshops
• Hair and beauty salons
• Music, Media and art studios
• Sports science lab
• General teaching and IT classrooms
• Skills rooms and a sensory room for learners with disabilities
• Conference facilities and Learning Resource Centre.
"Providing facilities that inspire and motivate students is one of five strategic objectives which support the college's vision for the future. The Chippenham project represents the next stage in the transformation of Wiltshire College's facilities across the county. This transformation programme has already delivered a state of the art Learning Resource Centre in our Trowbridge campus and work is underway on the new Construction Skills Centre also in Trowbridge which is due to open in September 2014. These are very exciting times for the learners of Wiltshire College," said Di Dale, Principal and Chief Executive, Wiltshire College.
Students studying at the college will be unaffected by the building works. Once the new building is complete, the existing buildings will be demolished and the site landscaped.
The new building is being designed to be highly energy efficient and sustainable, in line with the college's objective to integrate sustainability into all aspects of its activities, including energy management and the management of its buildings.
Plans will be submitted in November for planning approval and be on public display in the Reception area of the Chippenham campus during November.
Upon receiving planning consent and final approval for funding from the Skills Funding Agency, construction is expected to start in April 2014, with the college opening to students in September 2015.
Curriculum areas offered at Chippenham will also include creative and digital media, art and design, games development, motor vehicle engineering, engineering, performing arts, music, travel and tourism, IT and computing, public services, business and management, sport, health and social care.
