A new non-emergency police number will be launched in Wiltshire in just 11 days.

Police are counting town until September 19 when the new '101' number goes live for all non-emergency calls.

At the moment people have to call 0845 408 7000 to report a non-emergency. But too many people continued to use 999.

This easy to remember number is an attempt to push people away from dialling 999 for non-emergencies.

Wiltshire Police say 999 should be used for an emergency, when a crime is happening, someone suspected of a crime is nearby, someone is injured, being threatened or in danger.

If you're unclear, non-emergencies include:

•contacting local officers

•getting crime prevention advice

•making police aware of policing issues in your local area

•making an appointment with a police officer

•for any other non-emergency

•reporting a crime (unless crime in progress, when you should dial 999)

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, you can textphone the police on 18001 101. Calls to 101 from landlines and mobiles cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day you call or how long your call lasts.
