Shops and cafes will open late in Chippenham from next week in an initiative to boost trade in town.

ChAP, Chippenham Town Council and Chippenham Chamber of Commerce have announced "Chippenham Alive!" designed to breathe life into Chippenham after 5.30pm (until 9 pm) on a series of pilot weekday evenings evenings, starting on Thursday October 20.

The following open evenings will be Friday November 18 (Christmas lights switch-on night) and Thursday December 15.

Emma King, spokesman for the town council: "On these evenings we are trying to arrange for the shops and cafes to open late, some street entertainment to be presented, and as many things to do of interest as possible.

"Wiltshire Council has made a grant to help with the street entertainment. The Street Heat Samba Band will also be playing. Most of the shops are now on board with this initiative and the evening is shaping up to be a great success."

I agree that rduced parking is the main problem but i'd certainly be encouraged to use the town more of an evening. Hopefully it'll draw in people who perhaps work outside of Chippenham to come and do their shopping at home. We'll see!

What a waste of time, money and effort.

Shops are open longer now than they ever used to be, this 'initiative' will not help the struggling retailers, cheaper car parking and lower rent and rates will do that.

Who would want to venture into town when it's dark, cold and probably persisting with rain to buy a mobile phone or a cup of coffee?
